    will accept queries during
    our next submission period
    only, January 1 through
    March 31, 2011.

   We are considering
    literary short stories,  
    literary novels or
    non-fiction prose only.

    IMPORTANT NOTE:
    No poetry collections will be
    considered in 2011 or 2012.

    We have a number of new
    publishing projects already in
    progress for 2011 and 2012, so
    additional new acquisitions will be
    limited to six or fewer. Consequently,
    competition will be greater.

As a literary press, we look for
high-quality fiction, nonfiction and poetry
with a distinctive voice to add to our expanding catalog.

We only accept queries via email during January-March and only
during years when we open the submission period (none in 2012).
This allows us to spend more time reading manuscripts,
and using less paper  meets our environmental commitments.
Never send a manuscript without querying first.
We will let you know whether we wish to see
the full manuscript.

TO SUBMIT A QUERY:
Send email to editors@motesbooks.com
with "MotesBooks LITERARY SUBMISSION"
in the subject line.
Include a cover letter, a one-page synopsis, your
best 20 pages from the work you wish to submit,
a bio, and a list of any previous publications
you may have earned.
(All attachments should be Word docs.
If we can't readily open your attachments,
we won't be able to consider your query.)

Any queries or unsolicited manuscripts sent via
postal mail will be recycled without being read.

Please understand that we are a small, independent press
that has historically received a high volume of unsolicited
queries. Our acquisitions editor will respond to you only if he is
interested in seeing more of your material based on your query.

We do accept simultaneous submissions,
however we ask that you indicate that circumstance
in your cover letter.

Allow at least 12 weeks for a response.
No email or telephone inquiries
to verify submission status, please.

NOTE:  If you do not get a response to your query,
it means we do not consider your manuscript  
the right fit for the catalog that
MotesBooks is currently building.
