MOTIF is an anthology series published by MotesBooks. Previous MOTIF volumes have featured emerging
and established writers in various genres. Past MOTIF contributors include Patty Griffin, Buddy & Julie Miller,
Maurice Manning, Barbara Crooker, Frank X Walker, Silas House and Pamela Duncan.
Beginning with Volume 4, the book’s size will decrease and the selection process will be intensified.
Each volume in the MOTIF series focuses on a theme – for MOTIF Volume 4 the theme is WATER.
Submissions may be poems, short stories, song lyrics, short memoirs, essays, letters, nonfiction, or other forms.
Combinations of forms from a single writer are acceptable up to the limits described in these guidelines.
The MOTIF Anthology Series will accept submissions of the following lengths:
~ Prose (fiction or nonfiction) - under 3,000 words
~ Poetry or Lyrics - up to 3 pieces.
All genres will be considered as long as WATER is referenced or illuminated in the works, directly or indirectly, in
significant and artful ways. The definition, metaphor or concept of “water” can be interpreted in any way the writer
Submit by email only. Your manuscript (any standard 11 pt. font, single-spaced) should be submitted as a Word
file (.doc or .docx). Send it to MOTIF@MotesBooks.com. IMPORTANT: Use "MOTIF-4" as the subject line
(email containing blank subject lines will automatically be deleted; other subject lines may inadvertently be tagged
Include all author contact information (name, phone, mail and e-mail addresses) on each piece you submit.
Include a 50-word bio to appear in a “Contributors” section of the anthology, in case of acceptance.
Writers retain their copyrights. Do not send previously published or simultaneously submitted material.
We charge NO reading fee.
Submission period closes February 1, 2014. Acceptances notified in Spring. Publication in Summer 2014.
NOTE: Submission guarantees that contributors (1) own and control rights to the work they submit
and (2) agree that published submissions (or excerpts) may be posted on MotesBooks.com (or on a separate
MOTIF series website if one is created) and used in the series’ promotional materials.
NOTE: If any piece we accept is later published elsewhere, it should at that time indicate that the work was
“previously published by MotesBooks in the MOTIF Anthology Series.” A volume number and/or year may also

However, this opportunity is entirely optional; there is NO purchase requirement.
Retail outlets will include Powells.com, Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, and other online or brick-and-mortar
booksellers. We are fans of independent bookstores, and they will order books on request. MotesBooks titles are
